Sasha is a multi-talent artist working across different art media, bringing a unique perspective to creativity and the meaning of art. She uses photography, textiles, and sculpture with found objects (both natural and man-made) to create with, whilst also being a dancer and writer. With 15 years of formal Russian Ballet tuition, her background in dance frames her relationship art and orientation towards embodiment as much as her experience of chronic illness does.
Dance notation is an interest of Sasha's for its role as an interfacing surface of dance, text, and visual art. She has published a paper on ballet notation with the Dance Art Journal proposing that dance notation of the 18th century not only visually represents dance steps but also index ideologies of feeling. Sasha uses dance notation as a framework of pattern that visually represents shared feeling and embodiment which is used to underpin her creativity.
With embodiment as a core theme in her artwork, Sasha incorporates interactivity into her visual art work, describing how she views the completion of artwork occuring through the act of sharing it. She believes art is not limited by its materiality but is expanded when the viewer observes art through their own experiences, memory and perception, creating a unique relationship between the art and the viewer.
In 2024, Sasha designed a life-size sculpture of her double bed for the Norwich Unconsumed exhibition. The double bed was crafted from glossy photos woven together, the photos were macro images of food, playing with comfort, discomfort, and use. She wants to continue to exhibit her work and create new larger-scale work through installation pieces alongside exploring her interest in the production and curation of art exhibitions.
Sasha is now predominantly a writer, writing across non-fiction and fiction; she currently holds a position as poetry editor with Scribbled. She has also experience working as an arts facilitator, facilitating creative writing workshops for a variety of clients including students with English as an additional language, performance artists, and academics.
